A large part of the territory of St. Romain is covered by woods, which allows for numerous walks.

The wood consists mainly of leaf trees dominated by the common oak. Beech trees and pubescent oaks mingle with hardbeam, sweet cherry, acorn, sycomore and ash trees. One also finds some pine varieties like the black and wood pine as well as firs.

The sometimes very abundant box tree constitutes much of the bush vegetation. Where it is absent hazel wood, the male cornel tree, viburnum, dogwood, and the common privet take its place.

But it is the dry grass areas on rocky underground which offer the most remarkable flower varieties. Thus one may find the limodorum abortivum, the inula montana, the golden aster, the grass lily or the odontitus luteus.

Finally, at the bottom of a humid valley, the monk’s hood and the martagon lily of a splendid sight in spring time.

The game population of the woods of St. Romain is rather common with its numerous deer, wild boar and badgers…

Except for common birds of prey the presence of breeding places allows for the observation of the peregrine falcon. Sometimes one may also discover the snake-buzzard “Jean – le – blanc”.
